Environment
General Overview
Czechoslovakia went through rapid growth and industrializa-tion for several decades after
World War II. This hyperdeve-lopment, however, was achieved at the expense of the envi-ronment
and the country's natural resources. In particular, the use of low-quality brown coal
contributed to high levels of air pollution; toxic vehicle emissions exacerbated this pro-blem.
Industrialization also contributed to severe acid rain and consequent forest damage, and
the pollution of scarce water sources.

Current Environmental Issues
Key current environmental issues in the Czech Republic include the following:
· air and water pollution in areas of northwest Bohemia, and in northern Moravia around
Ostrava
· damage to forests from acid rain
· water shortages
· steady contamination of ground water sources by ur-ban wastes
· facultative use of toxic agro-chemicals and pesticides |
